The Falloons

Papa was joined by Bob Jnr, Adam, Alex and our Jonny Wigg. An swift tour with music from around the world, Papa singing songs from Ireland, Scotland, Zorba the Greek, Bob Jnr playing wonderful Bosa Nova and Moondance, Adam playing fabulous Djembi in the Falloons version of 'I'd rather be a hammer than a nail', Alex enthralling us with his fingerpicking, and then Jon playing fiddle and mandolin to such classics a Irish Washerwoman, Flower of Scotland etc. Full house for the Falloons and there was something for everyone!

Mike Dowling

A very big thank you to Mike Dowling for squeezing us in. (The last night of his tour here in the UK). I have seen Mike many times and each time is just as exciting as the first. He manages to slip in and out of so many styles with the ease of butter dripping from hot toast. It is so totally effortless and enthralls even the best of guitar players. To round off my evening for me he played my favourite Jitterbug Waltz (by Fats Waller).

Nick Barraclough and the Burglars

What an lively evening from this entertaining band from Cambridge. The humour of some of the lyrics spills into the banter between songs. The four of them obviously just go out to have some fun. After thirty odd years of playing together the cogs are well oiled with exchanges of instruments and each singing songs with glorious 4-part harmonies. They have even offered to accompany Jon on the Orange Blossom Special. Can't wait to have them back!

Don Mescall

Don Mescall was born in County Limerick. He is a singer/songwriter and learned his trade doing the Irish pubs. Don brought his fine Irish charm, intensely personal lyrics and raw honesty in delivery. He had people sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation of the song which was to follow. His set included such beautiful songs as 'The Lighthouse Keeper' and 'Magdaline Laundries' and 'Paradise'. He had the audience joining in with 'Closer' and 'The More I see the less I understand', but it was the introduction and the last song 'You're Still The Only One' (written from Don's mum's perspective after losing his dad)that had the audience moved to tears.

El Mondo Combo

On the wettest windiest night in August these guys came and played and brought sunshine into the room. I can't help feeling that it was the best band to have on such a bad night! They were out to have fun and that transposed into their music and made an incredibly enjoyable evening for all those that braved it out. The upbeat tempo set the tone for the night. I can't wait to invite them back again.

Roger Hubbard

Well what a fantastic night we had. I think it was our most diverse evening of all. With Jon starting it, followed by some flamenco guitar from Bob Falloon Jnr. Then we had Sharon Elizabeth singing opera and then finally Roger Hubbard who had us enthralled with slide blues guitar. A truly entertaining evening.

Phil Beer

A waiting crowd and then a full room enjoyed the wonderful Phil Beer. He is, of course, a quality performer who didn't fail to entertain his audience with anecdotes and stories. Mix that with being a multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter, he provided the audience with a fabulous evening. Thanks Phil!

Kirsty McGee

The finest in British 'Hobopop', songs of vagrancy and down-and-out tunes deftly performed by Kirsty McGee (guitar & vocals)and Mat Martin (guitar, violin, banjo, mandolin and vocals) Thanks, Kirsty and Mat for a great gig. They gave us an entertaining evening set of self penned songs. Kirsty's sensitive viocals drawing the listener in, her subject matter the problems and hypocrasies of our world. Great musicianship from Mat playing a plethera of instruments, old time banjo, guitars and mandolin to name a few. Thanks to all those of you that joined our stage to entertain us tonight.

Last Night's Fun

Denny Bartley - guitarist, Nick Scott - Uilleann pipes, Chris Sherburn - Concertina and Ciaran Boyle - bodhran, make up this very exciting traditional Irish band. They embody a fire, passion and feel for traditional Irish music. We were pleased to welcome a packed house tonight - some newcomers visiting the club to see Last Night's Fun, what a joy, so much quality. And a bit mad too thanks to Chris! We haven't heard the Uilleann pipes in the room since the Furies visited the old club back in the 70's. Nick Scott's playing was a real treat. What a fabulous voice Denny Bartley has to match his guitar playing. Excellent bodhran from Ciaran who manages to make it sing and with Chris on concertina it all made for a thoroughly superb evening. Thanks to all those who came and supported them on stage.

The Bully Wee Band are players of folk/rock with a formidable reputation. The band is made up of Ian Cutler: violin, keyboards, Colin Reece: acoustic guitar, Jim Yardley: mandolin, whistles and Fergus Feely: mandocello. Another stonking evening was had by all.

The Lonnigans

The UK's top skiffle group, The Lonnigans, play American roots music in a thoroughly British fashion. Donny (Eddie Armer) enchanting chromatic harmonica, Sonny Lonnigan (Steve Simpson) what a treat! The Amazing Mr Smith

The Amazing Mr.Smith has been described as Monty Python's answer to John Williams. His combination of mad inventions and brilliant acoustic guitar playing make him one of the funniest and most original entertainers around. The Amazing Mr Smith entertained us with his own inventions: The condom bagpipes, Happy face, Dambusting propeller resulted in our sore jaws and aching sides. He is a very accomplished guitar player using such things as Bach's Toccata in D to tune his guitar up, his impression of John Williams and Julian Bream match easily to the popular tunes he also plays.

6.15 and Tony Carling

6.15 - Dave, Ian and Wally. Guitar, mandolin & bass, good harmonies. They play jazzy bluegrass with a country twist. Also - Tony Carling a wry humoured writer of quirky songsbrings an urban edge to our club. A great night! The Amberley audience really appreciated Tony's songs and his easy style. Although there is a humerous edge to his material behind it all lies an autobiographical thread which gives a real life feel to his songs. Tony's enthusiasm is quite infectious and he is obviously at ease in front of an audience. To pigeonhole him as a comedian would be wrong, he's more than just that. The audience, however, were falling about on many occasions as well as grinning along with the more subtle innuendos. Six Fifteen gave us a blast of pure energy, their set included a lively mix of bluegrass, Django and Irish, (chew on that and spit out the bones!). Their frontman Dave Soothill is a great 'flatpicker' and puts everything into the vocals including some remarkable high notes. Warren Ball, on the bass, was brilliant as usual, a much underrated bassist. Last, but not least is Ian Robinson on mandolin, who's fingers move so fast they are a blur! They finished by playing 'Mozart on Acid' a fast moving piece based on 'The Southbank Show' theme tune. Well done lads. Thanks very much from the Amberley crowd.

Dave Pegg and PJ Wright

Dave Pegg -(Fairport/ Tull) and PJ Wright -(Little Johnny England/Steve Gibbons) come together to play original songs from their cd "Galileos Apology" + some Fairport, Sandy Denny and LJE. Tickets in advance. Many thanks to Peggy and P.J. for a bit of a special gig! A fullhouse in attendance all enjoying the intimate atmosphere. It was great to see Peggy playing guitar and mandolin and obviously enjoying the informality. He and P.J. combine really well. Personal favourite was 'Bushes and Briars' (Sandy Denny) - P.J's version was very sympathetic, quite a feat for a male vocal. P.S Loved the choreography!

Alan White

It was great to see Alan turn up to do a floor spot at Shep Woolley's gig last August. He is getting back into gigging and a good job too! His cleverly written songs keep you enthralled and laughing in equal measure. The quiet unassuming man plied us with humerous ditties that reflected on everyday life. His 1804 Nelson monologue was oh so very cleverly written.
